Ah- a blog! I am finally getting in line with the modern world of online storytelling! My kids and I had a lot of fun discussing possible names for this blog, such as "geriatric genealogist" [Just kidding, Mom!"] and "Memorable musings". We finally settled on the rather neutral "Project:roots".
My life is pretty much focused on family history in its many different aspects. So most of my blog entries will also follow along those lines, perhaps with a little music thrown in for good measure. I want to tell stories that bring our ancestors and their world to life and help us understand them better. Perhaps I can also share some historical pictures, interesting facts, and fascinating little details. For instance, did you know that over 130 German words translate into "farmer", but with various connotations that place the person in a certain place within the social structure of the time?
Or German marriage laws - a very interesting subject! Imagine having to present an affidavit of earning power and proof of property ownership to the town council in order to receive permission to marry! This was required in several 19th Century German states.
So let's have some fun as we explore the world of our ancestors together!
